Every state sets its own minimum coverage requirements. This chart shows what your state requires. Remember: minimums are the legal floor, not what you should actually carry.
Important: These are minimum requirements as of November 2026, including the increases that took effect in 2025 (California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Utah, Virginia) and on January 1, 2026 (Hawaii, New Jersey). States update their minimums periodically. Always verify with your state's department of insurance for the most current figures. Minimum coverage is rarely enough to protect you financially. See Auto Insurance Decoded for guidance on choosing appropriate limits.
All amounts shown in thousands (e.g., "25" = $25,000). Split limits shown as BI per person / BI per accident / PD.
No-Fault states require PIP coverage and restrict your ability to sue after minor accidents. Tort (at-fault) states allow you to sue the at-fault driver for damages.
